This mask comes from the Punu Tribe, the Punu Tribe lives on the left bank of the Ngoume River in Gabon.

The men of this tribe are the only ones allowed to carve these masks, which they do to show their appreciation for the natural beauty of the woman in their tribe.

The elaborate high hairstyles of the masks depict wealth to show that the woman did not have to carry heavy loads on their heads that would flatten their natural hair. Some Punu masks have painted white faces which are used to represent the ancestors during multiple funeral ceremonies.

Double-faced masks are symbolic of bringing two spirits or two different families together. They are used a lot during wedding ceremonies to portray and celebrate the coming together of two families.

Small cracks, discoloration, etc are a normal part of the aging process and add to the character of each item.

Each mask is unique.
